Man Utd complete Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui deals but Luke Shaw injured again

Big signings come amid further injury concerns for Erik ten Hag with left-back set to miss start of season

Erik ten Hag has bolstered his defence by completing deals for Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui but will be without Luke Shaw for the start of the Premier League season after a fresh injury blow.
The Manchester United manager will have two more of his former players from Ajax in his squad for next season after a €70 million package, including add-ons, was agreed with Bayern Munich. Both players moved to the German club after reaching the Champions League semi-final under Ten Hag.
De Ligt’s deal is worth £38.5 million up front with £4.25 million in bonuses depending on performance, while Mazraoui will cost £12.8 million initially and the same amount of add-ons as his team-mate.
United sources say the signings are in full alignment with the structure behind the scenes, with chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Dan Ashworth now in place, although the players are also clearly well-known to the manager after playing significant roles in his time with Ajax.

“Erik ten Hag shaped the early stages of my career, so he knows how to get the best out of me and I cannot wait to work with him again,” said De Ligt. “I know what it takes to succeed at the highest level, and I’m determined to continue that record at this special club.”
Ten Hag, having survived an end-of-season review in the summer, has also signed Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee this summer and the club pulled off a transfer coup to land Leny Yoro from Lille despite interest from Real Madrid, with the French centre-back sidelined after a foot operation.
De Ligt and Mazraoui are set to give Ten Hag more options after a summer of injury problems that has left him short on numbers. Yoro was injured almost immediately after signing, while Shaw has now picked up a new injury having nursed a hamstring injury heading into the European Championship.
Shaw made his first start since February in the Euros final defeat by Spain after setbacks in his comeback last season. He rushed back from injury to help save United’s season, playing before he was ready to return.
United expect him to be out until the end of the first international break, with England playing against Ireland on Sept 7 and then Finland four days later.
